Community trade information: Tea tree oil is famed for growing in Australia, but it grows just as well in Africa. The Kenya Organic Oil Farmers Co-operative Association (KOOFA) grows their certified-organic tea tree in the shadow of Mount Kenya in mineral-rich volcanic soil. The plants are irrigated with glacial water and the leaves are hand-picked for the most effective oil. The group provides 270 small-scale farmers with an environmentally-friendly alternative to producing chemical-laden snow peas. And in a country devastated by AIDS, it gives women a way to support their families.
